Described as “The World’s Most Appalling Toy Store”

Animal activists have been calling one of the worlds most famous toy stores, Hamleys of London, the worlds most appalling toy store. Why all the fuss?

As part of a Christmas promotion, Hamleys had been advertising that they would have live animals on display. One advertisement stated “Take a trip to Hamleys after school on Monday to visit our real life Penguin Pool! You will be able to see the penguins swim, interact with their friends and be fed at tea time!”

Another ad stated “Have you ever dreamt of meeting Rudolph? Well now’s your chance to meet some of his friends! Come into the magic of Hamleys after school to pet and feed our real beautiful Mummy and Baby Reindeer.”

Animal lovers and animal rights activists across the UK were appalled at the idea of animals being used in such a manner as a promotional gimmick to attract shoppers into the store.

According to the RSPCA [Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals], it would not be illegal to have arctic animals in a heated store.

There has been many complaints as a result of the ads issued by Hamleys, who have now withdrawn them. Whether or not the event will still go ahead remains to be seen.
